Stanley Gamble finished his ACU Suzuki GSX-R600 Trophy season on a high taking pole position and race win today at Pembrey after wrapping up the Championship yesterday.

He gapped second place man Chris Hawkes by a good 9secs with Taryn Skinner taking a fighting third place giving him his second podium finish of the season. Skinner was once again awarded the Express Insurance Top Gun cash award for the best novice ride of the day.

Gamble lead the pack at the start of the race only to be passed by Hawkes. Gamble held unto him for five laps before putting a move on him and stealing the lead. Gamble put his head down and pulled away setting the fastest lap of the race with a time of 1min 1.6secs.

Ritchie Thornton had hoped for another podium to complete his season however some chassis changes between races went the wrong way for him and his tyres went off leaving Skinner to take third place.

The biggest battle of the race was between William Bergin and Ross Richards, Bergin held him off to take fifth place and also pick up the Relentless rider of the day award. Unfortunately for Richards he was disqualified for not having a transponder fitted. Joe Moore had been holding fourth place until suspension problems kicked in forcing him to retire.

Gamble has won a GSX-R1000, Richards has picked up the GSX-R600 for being the highest placed under 25-year old and Skinner has won the Express Novice of the season cash prize.

Gamble finishes second but takes title

Gamble finishes second but takes title

Chris Hawkes may have taken a dominant win today at Pembrey but it was second placed man, Stanley Gamble who picked up the ACU Suzuki GSX-R600 Trophy Championship.

Hawkes got the hole shot off the line and simply banged in consistent laps which were 1 second faster than anyone else. He also set the fastest lap of the race with a time of 1min 1.96secs s good half second clear of everyone else. He came over the line 20secs clear of second placed man Gamble.

Gamble had a battle on his hands with Ritchie Thornton who has settled into second place but he put a clean move on him and then proceeded to extend the gap. Thornton had to settle for third place on the podium.

Taryn Skinner was awarded the Express Insurance Top Gun cash award for the highest placed novice as he came home in a superb fourth place. He was just ahead of the epic battle which raged between Joe Moore and Ross Richards for fifth and sixth places, Moore came out on top grabbing fifth place leaving Richards in sixth.

Adam Foster was given the Relentless Rider of the day award which is awarded by the commentators to the most entertaining rider. Foster managed a huge wheelie off the line he almost crashed and actually found himself sitting on the back of the seat unit. This left him dead last but undeterred he worked through the pack to take third place. However he out did himself and crashed on lap 14 giving up his third.

The final round of the Championship will be held tomorrow with another qualifying session to determine grid positions.

Hawkes: "My main concern was the start but I got away well and put my head down and worked on putting in consistent fast laps. I rode off my pit board for the race and I must say it was a tough one. I'm pleased with the result I just wish I'd ridden like that all year. Full credit to Stanley he did a great job and deserved to win the title"

Gamble: "I'm over the moon to get it wrapped up one round early. The pressure is off now so I can relax and enjoy tomorrow's racing. Good job I won as we had t-shirts made up and everything!"

Thornton: "I'm still chasing my first win this year but I've another chance tomorrow so I'll see what I can do. I think Stanley did a great job and well done to him for taking the title."

Hawkes snares pole at Pembrey

Damp conditions greeted the GSX-R Trophy riders as they took to the 1.456-mile Pembrey circuit to qualifying today for the penultimate round of the ACU Suzuki GSX-R600 Trophy with Chris Hawkes securing pole position.

Stanley Gamble the Championship leader set pole position early in the session and held it until the mid-point. As the track started to develop a drying line the times improved and Hawkes jumped into pole position with a time of 1min 4.4secs. Adam Foster found some clear track and posted an impressive 1min 4.8secs lap to take second place.

Ritchie Thornton also put in a fast lap towards the end of the session grabbing third place and relegating Gamble to fourth place on the front row of the grid. Taryn Skinner was on form and he heads row two in sixth place, lining up next to him is MCN's Colt Dwyer in seventh place. Completing the second row of the grid is Paul Rodgers in eighth place.

Rounding out the top ten is Ash Davies in ninth with Ross "Rossi" Richards in an uncharacteristic tenth place.

Gamble needs to finish in sixth place or above to take the title; he has decided to see how the race develops and try not to make any mistakes as the Championship is now his to lose.

Acton packed win for Gamble

Stanley Gamble took a hard fought win today at the 10th round of the ACU Suzuki GSX-R Trophy at Brands Hatch in Kent.

He was followed over the line by Ritchie Thornton who is now running second in the Championship. The final step of the podium went to Taryn Skinner who was very much the surprise package of the weekend, grabbing a front row start, a podium finish and picking up the Express Insurance Top Gun Cash Award for his achievements.

Off the line it was pole sitter Birch who took the lead with Chris Hawkes and Gamble giving chase. Unfortunately for Birch he went wide at Hailwood and allowed Hawkes to take the lead. Gamble then made a move on him at Surtees which saw Birch go wide and rejoin the action in last position.

Hawkes was now leading from Gamble with a huge battle on for third place between Skinner, Marcus Woodbine, Ross "Rossi" Richards, and Ritchie Thornton. Gamble decided to play a waiting game and followed Hawkes until lap 17 when he passed him at Surtees. Hawkes had the worst of luck crashing out on the final lap at Druids.

Birch worked his way from last to 11th place until he had a big off at Paddock Hill bend. Lewis Maku raced with a broken foot and although he finished last he worked hard all weekend and did a good job of keeping out of the leaders way. For his efforts he received the Relentless Rider of the Day award.

Gamble is now 41 points in the lead over Thornton and just another 10 points will secure the title for him. The final two rounds of the GSX-R Trophy will take place on the 18th-19th October at Pembrey in Wales.

Birch grabs pole at Brands Hatch

Top novice rider Michael Birch has secured pole position ahead of round 10 of the ACU Suzuki GSX-R600 Trophy at Brands Hatch in Kent.

Birch put in an impressive 51.74sec lap in round the 1.19-mile indy circuit to beat Chris Hawkes to the number one spot. Taryn Skinner has taken his first front row start of the season by putting his GSX-R600 into third place with a lap time of 51.89secs. Championship leader Stanley Gamble completes the front row of the grid.

MCN competition winner Colt Dwyer qualified in 12th place and Irish Racer's guest rider, Darren Gilpin took 16th. The racing is shaping up to be a close fought affair with the top 10 covered by just one second. There was only one faller during the session and that was Ash Davies who tipped off at Druids unhurt.

Gamble impressed with European GSX-R750 Cup

The ACU Suzuki GSX-R Trophy Championship leader Stanley Gamble competed in the fifth round of the European GSX-R750 Cup at Donington Park last weekend, coming home in 13th place.

The Ulsterman was thrown in at the deep end with a different machine and tyres to get used to plus different riders to compete against. He was impressed with the high level of riding within the Championship and his job of trying to match that level was made harder by the lack of dry track time to allow him to gel with his new machine.

He qualified in 15th place but raced to 13th picking off some of the regular contenders and improving his lap times, posting a 1min 47 during the last lap of the race. Conditions during the race were tricky as the entire field had gone out on wet tyres and a drying line was appearing. Gamble found himself swapping paintwork with a German rider and was surprised at how aggressive it was on track. However he gave a good account of himself and learned a lot over the course of the race weekend.

Gamble will now be back in action this weekend at Brands Hatch for round 10 of the ACU Suzuki GSX-R Trophy where he will be hoping to further consolidate his Championship lead.

Gamble: "Everyone has been so friendly and helpful this weekend and the racing was at a much higher level than I had expected. The riders were a lot pushier too as I had latched onto the back of John Pearson and wanted to go with him as he is a good person to follow. Another rider came under me at the Melbourne Loop and just ran me wide, right off the track so I lost Pearson. You need to know more about bike set-up for the Cup but there was always someone on hand to help and advise. I've really enjoyed my experience this weekend and I want to say a big thank you to everyone involved."

Richards takes determined win at Oulton Park

Ross "Rossi" Richards put in a sterling performance today at the ninth round of the ACU Suzuki GSX-R600 Trophy picking up the race win from a hard charging Stanley Gamble.

The Championship leader Gamble had to settle for a close second place finishing just 0.4secs behind Rossi. Third place went to Ritchie Thornton who was hot on the heels of Gamble and came over the line just 0.29secs behind.

Off the line it was Thornton who tried to get away but Richards wasn't having that and went round the outside of him at turn one. Once in front he concentrated on putting in consistent laps and tried to break away, however he found his lack of pit signals this weekend hard to deal with and had to rely on looking at the chasing rider's boards.

Thornton was holding second place with novice rider Michael Birch in third and Gamble running fourth. Gamble wasn't settling for that an promptly took Birch on lap two he then put a move on Thornton on lap five at Hizzy's to secure his second place finish.

He was closing on Richards and looked set to make a move at turn one but with only 10 laps at his disposal he ran out of time.

Birch finished in fourth place picking up the Express Insurance Top Gun cash award while Scotsman William Bergin won the Relentless Rider of the day award which is appointed by the race commentators. Bergin got a bad start and fought back through the pack to pick up a ninth place finish, it was truly an impressive ride.

The 10th round of the ACU Suzuki GSX-R600 Trophy is at Brands Hatch on the 14th September.

Ross Richards: "I got Ritchie straight off the start round the outside at the first turn and then got my head down. I don't like leading from the front as it is hard to gauge your pace and I had no pit board so I was judging where I was based on when the other pit boards went out."

Stanley Gamble: "I got my usual start and I had to get away as it was only 10 laps. I found it hard to get into it but on lap four I found my rhythm and it felt better. I picked off a few people and got close to Ross, shame I didn't have a few more laps as I would have liked the win. I enjoyed that race though."

Ritchie Thornton: "I felt comfy on the back of Rossi but I didn't have enough to get by him. I went into the chicane in the wrong gear and that let Stanley get past me. Ross rode really well he was very defensive."

Michael Birch: "It was a good race I got a good start and was third into the first turn. I messed up my gears at a certain corner and that allowed Stanley to pass and then I did it again! I'm pleased with my lap times and I know I will go well next time I'm here."

William Bergin: "I got a bad start and just had to knuckle down to it. I'm pleased I won the Relentless award - that will keep us going for a while."

Race results:

1: Ross Richards 18min 20.36

Rossi Richards secure Oulton Park pole

A rather disgruntled Ross "Rossi" Richards took pole position for round nine of the ACU Suzuki GSX-R600 Trophy at Oulton Park today.

He lapped the 2.692-mile Cheshire track in 1min 49.94secs 0.33secs clear of second place man Ritchie Thornton. Richards' machine overheated in the humid conditions, he struggled with gearing and generally considered it not the best session, however he still pulled off pole position.

On the other hand Thornton was thrilled to pick up second place and a front row start as he hadn't realised he had put in such a strong lap time. Like Rossi he felt his lap time could have been better but everyone was down on their usual times for the Oulton Park circuit.

Michael Birch had a good qualifying putting his GSX-R in third place on the grid, completing the front row of the grid was last time race winner Chris Hawkes.

Championship leader Stanley Gamble heads row two of the grid with Adam Foster lining up next to him. John O'Neil had a tumble during the session falling at Druids but is currently seventh on the grid. And rounding out row two of the grid is Scotsman William Bergin.

Rossi Richards: "My bike overheated before the end of the session, my Dad is on the Isle of Man so I've had to sort most of this out myself. It's been a bit stressful. My gearing isn't right either but I'll have a look at that before the race. I'm pleased with pole but I'm sure I can put in some better times in the race."

Ritchie Thornton: "I didn't think I'd gone so well in that session, but my aim was front row and that is what I got. I've been here before and did a 1min 49secs and I know I'm not near that. There was a lot of cement dust down and it wasn't until the end of the session that I was confident enough to go through it."

Michael Birch: "I'm happy with that. I've been here before but I've not completed a race so I'm a little down on experience. There are a few corners where I'm not so strong but hopefully when the race gets going I can follow one of the more experienced riders and learn a few moves."

Qualifying results:

Race win for Hawkes at Castle Combe

Chris Hawkes kept his cool during a red flagged ACU Suzuki GSX-R Trophy race today at Castle Combe to take a dominant win.

Michael Birch also put in a strong performance to grab second place, he was also the highest placed novice giving him the Express Insurance Top Gun cash award and he impressed the commentator enough to receive the Relentless Rider of the Day Award. The final step of the podium went to Ulsterman and Championship leader Stanley Gamble.

When the lights went out for the first time it was Birch who got away well and was leading from guest rider Bruce "Dangerous" Wilson who was ahead of Hawkes. Joe Moore who put in an impressive run at Donington Park took third place off Hawkes on lap three. One lap later Wilson grabbed the lead from Birch just as the rain started to fall. Three fallers at Camp corner due to the rain brought out the red flags on lap six. The riders to go down were MCN's Competition Winner Colt Dwyer, Adam Foster and Ross "Rossi" Richards.

The grid for the re-start was formed based on race positions and it ran over nine laps. Moore took the early lead from Gamble with Hawkes giving chase. Hawkes went from third to first in one lap securing the lead on lap two, after that he was never headed and he came over the line 6.09secs clear of his nearest rival. Gamble took Moore for second place but that was short lived as Birch dug deep and took it from him on lap four of the re-start. Guest Rider Wilson finished in fourth place just off the podium and relegating Moore to fifth place.

The next round of the ACU Suzuki GSX- R Trophy will take place at Oulton Park on the 30th - 31st August.

Hawkes: "I got a terrible start initially but was third into turn one. Then I saw the safety car flag so I rolled and then the rain started. On the re-start I got to the front and I knew once I had clear road I could get away so I'm thrilled to get the win."

Birch: "It was a bit dodgy out there especially when it started spitting with rain. It was good to have Bruce in front of me as it helped to set the pace. On the re-start I got swamped and I had to be careful of the damp as well. I worked hard and got second place, Chris did well I'm pleased for him."

Gamble: "I'm disappointed that the red flag came out but on the re-start I got away good. Hawkes came past me and it was obvious that he had better pace than I did so I didn't try to pass him again. Then Birch got me and it was the same situation. It was my own fault as I assumed that the track was wetter than it was and I had softened off the suspension for the wet. We shall see what two weeks brings."

Dwyer: "I was in sixth place and chasing fifth, I could see the guys in front slowing up but I still had plenty of grip at that point and there were no spots on my visor. It wasn't until I tipped into the last turn that I realised how wet it was and down I went. My bike isn't in great shape but I'll do my best to be on track at Oulton Park."

Race results:

1: Chris Hawkes 11:31.15

2: Michael Birch +6.09
